On May 14, the winners of the Polish Photo Competition "Grand Press Photo" were announced in Warsaw, with first first prize for the Photo of the Year 2008 going to Tomasz Gudzowaty. The awarded picture shows a group of children from a private acrobatic school in Wuqiao County in Hebei Province, China.
Tomasz Gudzowaty also won three other awards in the same competition: in "sport - singles" category (1st and 2nd prize), and for the story from which the Picture of the Year was picked out by the Jury.
The annual Grand Press Photo competition, organized by Polish monthly "Press", is open to professional photojournalists, both staff photographers and freelancers. The jury, chaired by eminent American photojournalist Eric Grigorian, winner of World Press Photo 2003, had to choose from 4 900 pictures sent in for competition this year, 148 of them being qualified for the final in five categories: "news", "people", "daily life", "sport" and "nature"
- When I'm taking a picture, my goal is to make it memorable and moving, to convey mood and atmosphere of the place, to describe what the people in this picture are doing, to make the viewer respond to it on some kind of emotional level - said Gudzowaty in an interview after the ceremony.
