Soon after the last May rainstorm the Serengeti plain rapidly changes into a dry wasteland. Migration remains the only way out for the enormous herds of wildebeest. Following the evading rain, the animal torrent flows eastward in the direction of Lake Victoria, and then to the north, to the Masai Mara Reservation in Kenya, where an escarpment of tectonic origin stops the very last of rains. On the way the animals must cross the largest obstacle – the Mara River.
